Busking

Today I waited for over an hour to play for an hour at Willy St. Eventually they're going to have a sign-up list for musicians; right now it's a free-for-all and confusion ensued. Also, I didn't know to talk to the musician playing before me rather than the person in the store. I apologized lots, and got some good advice from a very experienced musician, so all-in-all it was a win.

Other new things I learned today:

  • Playing on the street when it's hot is not a good way to make the big bucks.
  • The Weary Traveler makes room for musician sometimes.
  • The Eastside Farmer's Market is also a good place to play.
  • The UW tells incoming students not to give money to street musicians as part of orientation (Full Disclosure:this is hearsay)
  • People Like my voice.

This was good practice, though. I was pretty bummed at first, because of the waiting and the confusion, and I was singing and no one was stopping. For the first 45 minutes, I made no money at all. Eventually I played a couple of sad songs to cheer myself up, and that made it better. I even played "The Life We could Have Had" (the short version), a song I swore I would never play in public again. And that's when I made one of my dollars. So sometimes, it's about playing what you feel.
